Eastbourne Trades Council wins TUC media Award

It was a proud week for Eastbourne Trades Council, as we won the Media/Campaigns award at the SERTUC regional trades councils conference.

The award recognises the work we do as a trades council, with our Workplace Newsletter which goes into nearly 150 unionised workplaces in the town, alongside additional material such as our Save the DGH leaflet, our Twitter and Facebook feeds,and, of course, this website.

The Trades Council received a £100 prize from TUC Trades Councils organiser Tom Mellish at the Conference on Saturday.

Trades Council Meeting: April 5th

TRADES COUNCIL MEETING- with "KEEP THE POST PUBLIC" speaker.

There will be a meeting of the Eastbourne Trades Council at 7.30pm, Tuesday 5th April 2011, at the Unite Eastbourne Centre (formerly T&G) , Grand Parade, Eastbourne. All local trade unionists are invited, (although only delegates from affiliated unions may vote on financial and policy matters.)

Guest Speaker from Keep the Post Public Campaign Peter Sinnott of the local Communication Workers’ Union will talk about the campaign against privatisation of the Royal Mail.

Anti-Cuts Campaigning: Where next after March 26th ? Report on progress of Eastbourne Anti-Cuts activity.

Local Elections: Update on campaigning opportunities around the Borough Council elections, including any threat of BNP candidates.

Union Campaigns: Colleagues invited to provide information on their Unions’ local and national campaigns, and any support that the Trades Council could give.

Newsletter now out

The first workplace newsletter for the Eastbourne Trades Council is now being distributed. If you are in a unionised workplace in Eastbourne, this should be on its way to your steward/rep now.

If you don't receive this, it may be that we don't have your workplace on our database- please let the secretary know by clicking here.

Trades Councils in the Community

Your union branch speaks up for your members and potentialmembers in the workplace. Whether it’s pay, rights at work, healthand safety or lifelong learning, your branch exists to get a better dealfor your members.

Unions also need to raise their voice in the world beyond the workplace when:
• the public services delivered and used by union members come under threat
• racists and fascists try to divide local communities
• local authorities seek to reduce democratic control of education or housing.

That’s where your local trades union council comes in. Trades councils bringtogether local union branches to campaign across a community on issuesthat matter to working people.

Facing closure?: Your trades council can provide practical support and solidarity.
Tackling racism? Your trades council can help unite local people against the haters.
Privatisation problems? Your trades council can help campaign for public ownership and democratic control.

Eastbourne Trades Council represents workers in public and private sector employment across the Borough of Eastbourne and the parish of Willingdon and Jevington.
